Wide Open Spaces
So where is Windhaven Farm?
Well, If your not local you would probably have a hard time finding it on a map. It’s one of those situations where our address is Dwight but we are unincorporated so it’s technically highland township (but hey, highest ground in Grundy county!) but in reality, we are actually closer to Verona then Dwight...
Sometimes when I’m explaining things to people I catch myself saying things like “ya I share a stray cat with a woman who lives across the cornfield” then pause for a minute thinking how crazy & abnormal that might sound to other people who don’t measure distances by cornfields on a daily basis🤣
It’s funny because my other job is in Naperville (yes totally different world) & customers are always like “Wait you live where?” “Is that even in Illinois?” “On like a real farm? With animals?” “A Farmette?” “OHH SOUTH OF 80!!!” Yep, that’s pretty much the only way to explain it..... south of 80. People make it sound like it’s a whole different world out here. But let’s face it, it seems like it!!!! It’s slower paced, people are friendlier, we have tractors that drive down the streets more than actual cars & we have CASEYS PIZZA! (Which I had last night. Don’t judge) We might as well break off & form our own state & call it flyover state because all you’d see is a whole lot of corn & soybeans! But I’d never complain about that, We have a neighbor down the street (see how I worded that lol 🤷🏼♀️) who brings us over the BEST sweet corn in the summer! Thank God for Famers. They do make up about 90% of this area.
So yes, We are located in full out small town USA. South of 80. Where our nearest neighbor is atleast a half a mile away. Where everyone knows everyone, & everyone’s business. & We use cornfields to measure distances.
But out here is where we chose to build our life. Just like the Dixie Chick song states “Wide open spaces....Room to make her big mistakes.” Because we are all only human. So maybe that’s all we need sometimes is to look down some rows in a field of corn, take in the view across that giant soy bean field, Let that cross wind take your worries away... Maybe we all just need some Wide Open Spaces.🖤
